Here’s my background story. I am one of the oldest of 7 siblings. Growing up, we didn’t have much but our parents always made a way. We wore secondhand clothing and shoes. I hated it! As soon as I graduated high school, I made up my mind that I wasn’t going to “look poor” ever again. College offered federal aid and student loans. I made sure to always borrow more than what I needed. I splurged on myself. I lived by the quote “you only live once!” I made sure to buy name brand clothing and expensive coffee. I even bought myself an expensive handbag or 2 . I went into a crazy phase of spending every chance I had. I picked up side gigs on and off campus. That meant more spending for me!

That pivotal moment: My mindset changed

One day, I was cleaning out my closet, and noticed how much clothes and handbags I never used; some still had tags on it. I realized I had to stop. I was spending so much money on things I no longer seen as important. I thought to myself. “I have expensive handbags but no life insurance. Here I am, approaching 25 with no life insurance. I dint have any money saved for an emergency. What would happen if I had an emergency? I was hustling backwards. I gave away my expensive bags to relatives. I began to get serious about my finances. I invested in life insurance. That’s how you become a boss! You become a master of your finances. I stared saving more and shopping less. I created weekly and monthly budgets and stuck with it. Now, don’t get me wrong! I still treat myself at times. I just don’t make it a habit to buy everything I see. You literally have to discipline yourself.

Moving forward

No matter how much income and revenue I generate in my business, I will always implement a budget. Material things don’t add value. If you have extra money, invest it into the stock market and rental properties. Why not let your money make more money. It’s always about changing your mindset. Let go of the idea that you must “look rich”. It’s okay to be smart and live within your means. This is how many millionaires stay rich. I encourage you to invest in good financial literacy books and take control of your finances today.
